Algid Descent is an organization bringing people of certain talents together for a single purpose. Our current focus right now is on Jonathan’s Place. For more than a decade, Jonathan’s Place has been taking care of the Dallas area’s youngest victims of abuse: newborn to 17 years old.
Algid Descent would like to gather toys to bring some joy into their lives. A moment of Joy can lead to hope and that hope leads to a future. Since the first thought that arises when thinking of donating toys is younger children, they have a tendency to get less age appropriate help for the older kids. We would like to fix that and we ask for your help in donating some fun things to present to them all by August 31, 2008. If you feel you would be able to help. Please contact us at the e-mail below.

Algid Descent- The uniting of the belief that one person can make a difference.
*just a quick note: Grafwurks will be involved with Algid Descent and the toy drive for Jonathan’s Place. So if you can donate some toys for us to take in conjunction with Algid Descent to Jonathan’s Place, please e-mail us at grafwurks@gmail.com, any toy is greatly appreciated. Thank you for making a difference!

Serj Tankian was born on August 21, 1967, in Beirut, Lebanon. He and his family immigrated to Los Angeles in 1975. In Beirut, Tankian took flute lessons as a young child. He earned a degree in Marketing and Business from California State University, Northridge and started his own software company before beginning his music career. In 1993, he founded his first rock band, Soil (not to be confused with SOiL) with Daron Malakian, Domingo Laranio, Dave Hakopyan, and later, Shavo Odadjian. Two years later, in 1995, after one supposed jam session recording and one live show, Dave and Domingo left. Shavo (who went on to become the bass player) brought in drummer Andy Khachaturian. The four of them then named themselves System of a Down. During System of a Down’s days, he was the vocalist in other bands for certain songs such as Mushroom Cult by Dog Fashion Disco and lent his vocals to the song Mein by Deftones. He produced “Enter the Chicken” by Buckethead, and provided vocals to the Buckethead songs We Are One, Coma, and Waiting Here. With Serjical Strike Records, he endeavours to offer those musicians often ignored by the mainstream a possibility to release their music and be heard. The first release of Tankian’s new label was Serart, a project consisting of Tankian himself, and Arto Tunçboyacıyan, an Armenian friend of Tankian’s.He originally began System of a Down to voice his views on politics, but felt that the band was not getting the message across. However, contrary to popular belief he stated in a recent interview that he did not leave the band and they have not split up, but decided to embark upon a solo career to open upon his own personal view on music to get his word out on his opinion of president Bush’s ignorance for going to war with Iraq. More recently, he sang with Les Rita Mitsouko on the song “Terminal Beauty”. Also, he sang with the band Fair to Midland during a live improvisational version of their song “Walls of Jericho”, from the album Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True, which was a massive hit with fans. He often collaborates as well with his close friend, director Diran Noubar on various projects, including the voice-over of Noubar’s “Armenia, a Country Under Blockade”. Noubar played some guitar on Tankian’s Elect the Dead album on the track “Saving Us” and directed the music video for “Baby”. Tankian is also very involved politically. Together with Tom Morello, he founded the organization Axis of Justice. Tankian has a secondary vacation cabin in New Zealand. There has been a misconception that he intends to stay in New Zealand until the Iraq War is over, but as stated in an interview, Tankian has no intention of doing so. He often speaks publicly against violence and injustice in the world. Tankian is at work on a second album, due in 2009. It is said to be more of a jazz and orchestral based sound. A new song, “Sounds of War”, has shown up in recent concert setlists, it has a jazz fusion style, it is unknown if it will be on the second record. Tankian told The Pulse of Radio last week that the highlights of his last eight months on the road may soon be documented in a DVD featuring videos, live performances and behind-the-scenes footage. Tankian is currently co-writing a musical with the American playwright Steven Sater. It is based on the Ancient Greek Tragedy Prometheus Bound. He stated that eight songs have been completed and that there will be a record. In a recent interview with Czech TV, Tankian stated that he quit smoking about four or five months ago because it was time to do so. Tankian was recently in Finland and in an interview with a Finnish magazine he stated that he would be interested of representing Armenia in the Eurovision song contest.

What are you thoughts on this? Really…sushi? Read the article below and tell me what you think…
The Southlake Carroll Dragons, the state’s premier high school football team, are nationally renowned for college-level offenses, suffocating defenses and talented athletes. And starting this year, Dragon fans can watch their highly ranked team from the stands while clenching chopsticks and munching on California rolls and other sushi delicacies. Yes, sushi. Talk about taking a sledgehammer to Texas’ hard-nosed, tough-hitting, tailgating, doesn’t-get-no-better-than-Friday-night-lights image. When asked if she’d eat sushi at a football game, Southlake mom Danielle Marez paused. She then paused some more. “It doesn’t seem like typical football fare,” she said as her young son and daughter stood nearby and smiled at the thought. H.G. “Buzz” Bissinger agrees. He wrote Friday Night Lights, a best-selling book and now NBC TV show about the 1988 Odessa Permian Panthers. “It sounds like Texas high school football has gone soft,” he said from his home in Philadelphia. “The idea of serving sushi at a Texas high school football game just flies in the face of everything I know about Texas high school football. “What are they going to serve next, penne pasta?” Mr. Bissinger said. “Let’s get back to good ol’ fashioned Texas barbecue.” But serving sushi makes sense in Southlake, school district nutrition director Mary Brunig said. “We have a very health-conscious community,” she said. “This is a healthy choice for those people who don’t want all those carbohydrates.” The school sold out of premium $3-a-bottle Fiji water at Dragon Stadium last year. And Southlake students can plop tofu on their salads from the school’s salad bar and swish them down with chocolate soy milk. Mrs. Brunig said she expects the sushi to sell well. Two Asian school employees will be serving it up in a grass-skirted tiki hut starting at the home opener Sept. 5. The high school and senior high school cafeterias will start selling sushi the following Monday. For $5 at the stadium and $4 at the schools, students can buy three types of rolls: Pacific shrimp rolls (shrimp, avocado, rice and nori), Seattle rolls (smoked salmon, cream cheese, asparagus, rice and nori) and California rolls (real crab, avocado, asparagus, rice and nori). Nori is the seaweed wrapped around the roll. “I might try it once,” said sophomore Price Arnold, 16. But he admits he doesn’t enjoy sushi that much anyway. He prefers watching Dragon football games while washing down a barbecue beef sandwich with a soft drink. Ms. Brunig said serving sushi is just the beginning. She said the schools plan to offer students more international foods, like tamales. And she’s looking at additional sushi variations, too, complete with the spicy green wasabi that fits so nicely with the Dragons’ green color scheme. Perhaps salmon roe, raw scallops or puffer fish – the potentially poisonous but prized and delectable Japanese fish? Or even edamame (steamed soy beans) lightly sprinkled with salt and served with soy sauce? Not anytime soon, Ms. Brunig said. “No, we aren’t going to get into sea urchins, either,” she said. “But we may do sushi desserts.”
